The Cocoa Transformational Project

At Biotree, we are dedicated to driving innovation and sustainability in agriculture. Our latest initiative, the Cocoa Transformational Project, aims to revolutionize the cocoa industry in West Africa through the introduction of advanced technology and ecological genetic materials that are not yet indigenous to the region.

Project Goals and Objectives

The Cocoa Transformational Project focuses on several key areas to enhance the cocoa industry:

  • Genetic Improvement for Higher Yields: We aim to improve genetic materials to produce higher-yielding cocoa plants, ensuring greater profitability for smallholder farmers.
  • Empowerment of Women and Youth: By providing training and resources, we aim to empower women and young people in the cocoa farming community, fostering economic independence and growth.
  • Sustainability and Adaptability: Our efforts include breeding cocoa varieties that are adaptable to different regions and environments, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Collaboration with CRIN

In collaboration with the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) in Ibadan, BioTree is pioneering the breeding of an extra early-bearing (precocious) cocoa variety without compromising bean quality. This new cultivar is recognized for its high yield and adaptability, making it one of the most popular clones for breeding programs and cultivation worldwide.

The introduction of this early fruiting cocoa variety addresses several critical issues:

  • Increased Productivity: The new cultivar helps combat the decline in productivity and quality in existing cocoa farms.
  • Farmer Retention: By improving yields and profitability, it discourages farmers from abandoning cocoa farming, which is vital for maintaining chocolate production.

CCN-51: A Drought-Resistant Cultivar

One of the standout innovations in our project is the CCN-51 (Coleccion Castro Naranjal 51) cocoa variety. This drought-resistant cultivar requires less water and less land to produce higher yields, making it ideal for regions affected by water scarcity and land limitations.

Impact on Farmers and Sustainability

Our project aims to significantly improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers, many of whom are struggling with wages below the poverty line. The high productivity of CCN-51 will enhance their economic conditions, ensuring a more sustainable and prosperous future for cocoa farming in Nigeria and other West African regions.

Looking Ahead: January 2026

BioTree plans to make the early fruiting cocoa seedlings available to farmers by January 2026. This initiative is crucial for generating a reliable source of income in the face of prevailing climatic changes that are affecting old cocoa plantations.

Call for Support

We are calling on the general public to support our field research project in Nigeria. Our goal is to raise $250,000 to fund this transformative initiative. Your contribution will help us achieve significant advancements in cocoa farming, benefiting farmers and ensuring the sustainability of cocoa production in West Africa.

Join us in revolutionizing the cocoa industry and supporting sustainable agriculture. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the lives of farmers and the future of cocoa production.

Stay tuned to Biotree for more updates on our projects and how you can get involved in fostering innovation and sustainability in agriculture.
